Delhi

Delhi, the sprawling capital of India, boasts a rich, layered history that spans millennia, often described as a city of cities. Its earliest incarnation is believed to be Indraprastha, the legendary capital of the Pandavas from the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata, dating back to around the 6th century BCE. Historically, the region gained prominence in the 8th century under the Tomara Rajput dynasty, who founded the city of Lal Kot. This was later captured by the Chauhans in the 12th century, before falling to Muhammad Ghori, marking the beginning of Islamic rule in northern India.

The subsequent establishment of the Delhi Sultanate in 1206 by Qutb-ud-din Aibak ushered in a new architectural and cultural era. Aibak initiated the construction of the Qutub Minar, a towering victory monument that remains one of Delhi's most iconic landmarks. Over the next three centuries, a succession of dynasties—the Mamluks, Khaljis, Tughlaqs, Sayyids, and Lodis—ruled from Delhi, each building their own fortified cities, such as Siri, Tughlaqabad, and Firozabad, contributing to Delhi's reputation as the "Seven Cities."

In 1526, Babur defeated the last Lodi sultan, establishing the Mughal Empire. While early Mughal emperors like Akbar and Jahangir preferred Agra and Lahore, Emperor Shah Jahan shifted the capital back to Delhi in 1638. He founded the magnificent walled city of Shahjahanabad (now Old Delhi), crowning it with the majestic Red Fort and the grand Jama Masjid. This era represented the zenith of Mughal art, culture, and architecture in the city.

The decline of the Mughal Empire in the 18th century left Delhi vulnerable to invasions by the Marathas, Persians, and Afghans. Following the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British East India Company exiled the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, and assumed direct control. In 1911, the British decided to move their capital from Calcutta to Delhi. British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker designed New Delhi, a grand imperial city characterized by wide avenues, the imposing Rashtrapati Bhavan, and Parliament House.

When India gained independence in 1947, New Delhi became the capital of the newly formed democratic republic. The partition of India brought a massive influx of refugees, fundamentally transforming the city's demographics and culture. Today, Delhi is a vibrant metropolis where ancient ruins and Mughal masterpieces stand alongside colonial avenues and modern infrastructure, offering travelers a captivating journey through India's tumultuous and glorious past.
