Agra

Agra, located on the banks of the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh, India, boasts a rich and complex history that stretches back millennia, though it is most globally renowned for its spectacular medieval and early modern heritage. The earliest references to the region appear in the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata, where it is referred to as Agravana, meaning "the border of the forest." Despite these ancient roots, Agra remained a relatively minor settlement for centuries.

The city’s transformation into a geopolitical epicenter began in 1504 when Sultan Sikandar Lodi, the ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, moved his capital from Delhi to Agra. Following his death, his son Ibrahim Lodi ruled from the city until 1526, when he was defeated by Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire, at the First Battle of Panipat. This victory marked the beginning of Agra's golden age. Babur made Agra the capital of his new empire, introducing Persian-style gardens to the city's landscape.

Agra reached the zenith of its architectural and cultural glory under the subsequent Great Mughals: Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan. Emperor Akbar, who ascended the throne in 1556, constructed the massive red sandstone Agra Fort and briefly moved his capital to the nearby purpose-built city of Fatehpur Sikri before returning. His grandson, Shah Jahan, left the most indelible mark on the city by commissioning the Taj Mahal in 1632. Built as a magnificent white marble mausoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, it remains one of the most iconic architectural masterpieces in human history.

In 1658, Shah Jahan’s son Aurangzeb shifted the imperial capital back to Delhi, initiating a gradual decline in Agra’s political importance. During the 18th century, the city changed hands multiple times among the Marathas, Jats, and eventually the British East India Company, which captured it in 1803. Under British colonial rule, Agra became an important administrative and commercial hub, and it played a notable role during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Following India's independence in 1947, Agra transitioned into a major industrial and tourist center. Today, it stands as a testament to India's rich historical tapestry, drawing millions of global visitors to its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri.
