Manali

Manali is a neighborhood and an industrial zone located in the northern part of Chennai, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Unlike the famous Himalayan resort town of the same name, this Manali has a history deeply intertwined with the industrialization and urban expansion of the Madras (now Chennai) metropolitan area. Originally a quiet, predominantly agricultural village on the outskirts of the city, Manali's transformation began in the mid-20th century as India focused on rapid industrial development post-independence.

The most significant turning point in Manali's history occurred in the late 1960s with the establishment of the Madras Refineries Limited (now Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, or CPCL) in 1965. This massive public sector enterprise was set up as a joint venture between the Government of India, Amoco, and the National Iranian Oil Company. The refinery's construction catalyzed the metamorphosis of Manali from a rural hamlet into a major petrochemical hub. Following the refinery, numerous other chemical, fertilizer, and heavy industrial plants set up operations in the vicinity, including Madras Fertilizers Limited (MFL) and Tamilnadu Petroproducts Limited (TPL).

As industries flourished, the demographic and physical landscape of Manali changed drastically. The area saw a massive influx of workers and professionals from various parts of Tamil Nadu and India, leading to the rapid development of residential colonies, commercial establishments, and infrastructure to support the growing population. The local economy shifted entirely from agriculture to manufacturing and industrial services.

In 2011, recognizing its urban growth and integration with the broader city, the Manali municipality was officially merged with the Chennai Corporation. It now serves as Zone 2 of the Greater Chennai Corporation. Despite its heavy industrial character, the area retains pockets of its historical and cultural roots, with several ancient temples dotting the landscape, serving as spiritual centers for the local community. Today, Manali stands as a crucial economic engine for Chennai, representing the region's industrial heritage and its ongoing contribution to India's petrochemical and manufacturing sectors.
