A deeper read on Kodaikanal.

What people love

Kodaikanal offers a perfect retreat with its cool, refreshing climate and stunning natural scenery. The town is surrounded by lush forests, picturesque lakes, and dramatic viewpoints, making it a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities, from boating on Kodaikanal Lake to trekking through the scenic Palani Hills. The peaceful atmosphere provides a welcome break from the noise and pollution of major cities. Additionally, the town's colonial heritage, vibrant botanical gardens, and delicious local chocolates add unique charm to the overall travel experience.

What to know

The town can become extremely crowded during the peak summer months and holiday weekends, leading to traffic congestion and fully booked accommodations. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rainfall that can disrupt outdoor activities and cause landslides on the winding mountain roads. Public transport within the town is limited, making it necessary to rely on taxis or walk to get around. Additionally, the high altitude means temperatures can drop significantly at night, requiring warm clothing even in summer, and some visitors may experience mild altitude sickness upon arrival.

Kodaikanal, often referred to as the "Princess of Hill Stations," boasts a rich and layered history that extends far beyond its modern reputation as a scenic retreat in Tamil Nadu. Situated high in the Palani Hills of the Western Ghats, the region's earliest history belongs to the indigenous Palaiyar (or Paliyan) tribal people, who have inhabited these forests for centuries. Archaeological evidence, including dolmens and other megalithic artifacts found in the surrounding hills, suggests that the area was settled by early agrarian communities long before recorded history. References to the Palani Hills can even be found in ancient Tamil Sangam literature, highlighting the region's long-standing cultural significance.

The modern history of Kodaikanal, however, began in the early 19th century. Unlike many other Indian hill stations that were exclusively founded by British colonial administrators, Kodaikanal was uniquely established by American Christian missionaries alongside British civil servants. In the 1840s, American missionaries working in the sweltering plains of Madurai sought a refuge from the oppressive heat and the rampant outbreaks of tropical diseases like cholera. In 1845, they established the first two bungalows in the area, officially founding the settlement of Kodaikanal.

The town quickly grew as a popular summer resort and a center for education and missionary work. A pivotal figure in Kodaikanal's development was Sir Vere Henry Levinge, a former District Collector of Madurai. After retiring to the hill station in the 1860s, Levinge invested his own resources into transforming the town's infrastructure. His most enduring legacy is the star-shaped Kodaikanal Lake, created in 1863 by damming three streams. He also introduced the first boat to the lake and brought various European fruits, vegetables, and flowers to the region, fundamentally shaping its agricultural landscape.

By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Kodaikanal had become a thriving community. The establishment of the Kodaikanal International School in 1901 further cemented its status as an important educational hub. Other historical landmarks from this era include Coaker's Walk, constructed by Lieutenant Coaker in 1872, and Bryant Park, a botanical garden landscaped by a British forest officer in 1908. Today, Kodaikanal retains much of its colonial-era charm and historical architecture, blending its indigenous roots and missionary heritage into a unique cultural tapestry that continues to enchant travelers from around the world.
