Kuala Lumpur International is about fifty kilometres south of the city,which puts it in the same category as Bengaluru rather than Bangkok - theairport transfer is a real journey, not a hop. The KLIA Ekspres train coversit in around half an hour and is genuinely fast, but it arrives at KLSentral, and unless your hotel is there you still need a second leg at thefar end with your bags. There are two terminals, KLIA1 and KLIA2, and they are several kilometresapart with a shuttle between them. KLIA2 is the low-cost terminal andhandles AirAsia. Which one you land at is worth telling a driver. The city itself is spread out and organised around a few distinct centresrather than one. Bukit Bintang is the shopping and nightlife district andwhere most visitors stay. KLCC, around the Petronas Towers, is the corporatecore - close to Bukit Bintang on a map, and connected by a covered walkway,but a separate destination for a driver. Chinatown and Kampung Attap are theolder quarter south of both, and Pudu sits just east. KL Sentral is the transport hub and a sensible base precisely because theairport train terminates there. Chow Kit and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman arenorth of the centre. Then there are the areas that are genuinely out of townand where visitors most often misjudge the trip: Bangsar and Bukit Damansarato the south-west are affluent and leafy but a real drive from the centre,Ampang sits east, and Bandar Sri Damansara is well to the north-west. Fromthe airport these are not detours off the city route - they are differentjourneys entirely, and some are shorter than going downtown. Two practical things. The route in from KLIA is a toll expressway, and tollsare charged on top of a metered fare, so the meter is not the total. AndKuala Lumpur's rain is worth planning around: the afternoon thunderstormsduring the inter-monsoon months are heavy enough to slow the expresswaynoticeably, and they arrive with very little warning. A fixed price agreedat booking means the weather changes your journey time but not your bill.
