Airport Transfers in Bangkok

Bangkok has two airports and they are not interchangeable. Suvarnabhumi,east of the city, takes almost all full-service and long-haul traffic. DonMueang, well to the north, is the low-cost hub and handles AirAsia, Nok Airand Thai Lion. They are on opposite sides of Bangkok, roughly an hour and ahalf apart in traffic, and a same-day connection between them is a seriousundertaking rather than a formality. Check which one your ticket says beforebooking anything - this is the most expensive mistake to get wrong here. From Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link runs into the city and is genuinelyquick, but it terminates at Phaya Thai and Makkasan and almost nobody'shotel is at either. For most addresses the honest comparison is one car doorto door against a train plus a BTS or MRT change plus a final taxi, withluggage, in heat. Where you are staying decides the shape of the journey more than thedistance. Sukhumvit is the long spine running east from the centre, and ahotel at the low soi numbers is a very different trip from one out past PhraKhanong - both say Sukhumvit. Sathorn and Bang Rak are the business districtsouth of it, Ratchadamri and Pathum Wan are the shopping core around Siam,and Khlong Toei sits between Sukhumvit and the port. All of these arereasonable runs from Suvarnabhumi and awkward ones from Don Mueang. Phra Nakhon is the old city - the Grand Palace and Rattanakosin - and it isthe one area where the modern rail network genuinely does not help. It isalso the furthest common destination from Suvarnabhumi. Thonburi, across theChao Phraya, is a river crossing on top of everything else. Going northinstead, Chatuchak, Lat Phrao, Din Daeng and Lak Si are closer to Don Mueangand further from Suvarnabhumi, which inverts the usual assumption entirely. Two practical notes. Bangkok traffic is genuinely unpredictable rather thanmerely heavy: the same journey can double depending on the hour, the day andwhether it is raining, and the rainy season from roughly May to Octobermakes afternoon downpours a routine part of the calculation. And meteredtaxis at both airports involve a surcharge plus tolls that are paidseparately, so the number on the meter is not the number you pay. A pricefixed when you book removes that guesswork, which matters most on the longairport runs where the variance is largest.
