Rishikesh Beyond the Ashrams: Rafting, Hiking, and Bungee

A practical guide to the best whitewater, heights, and trails in the canyon.

White water on the Ganges

Skip the 9km beginner float if you want real whitewaters. The short 9 km stretch, listed as Rafting Brahmpuri Down (9 km) from Rs 734, is mostly flat water with two tiny bumps—fine for young children, but a complete bore if you are looking for adrenaline. Instead, book the Half Day Rafting in Rishikesh - 26 Kms starting at Rs 2,494. This stretch runs from Marine Drive back to Laxman Jhula, cutting through Grade III and IV rapids like Roller Coaster and Golf Course. It takes about three hours on the water, not counting the 45-minute shared auto ride up the winding Badrinath Road to the put-in point.

Go between late September and mid-November, or from March to May. Monsoon season from July to August halts all river licenses, while December nights drop to 5°C, making the river water ice-cold. Most people make the mistake of bringing loose flip-flops and wet cotton clothing; wear strapped sandals and quick-dry synthetic shirts instead. If you fall out in the rapids, hold your knees to your chest and let the life jacket do the work—do not try to stand up on the rocky riverbed until you reach shallow water.

High wires and canyon leaps

Mohan Chatti, located about 25 kilometers upstream from main town, is where the serious drop happens. The Bungee Jumping Experience costs from Rs 3,500 and drops you 83 meters from a fixed cantilever platform suspended over the Hall River. The whole process takes about two hours, mainly due to weight checks, safety briefings, and harness fittings. Do not buy the extra video package unless you really need footage of your own terrified face—it adds unnecessary expense to an already steep price tag.

Right beside the jump site, you can tackle the Adventure Zip Lining over the Ganges from Rs 1,500. You clip onto a steel wire and fly half a kilometer across the river canyon at speeds around 140 kilometers per hour. To get to Mohan Chatti, rent a 125cc scooter in Tapovan for Rs 500 a day or share a taxi for Rs 1,200 round-trip. Arrive before 9:00 AM. By midday, the queue under the metal canopy gets sweltering, and wait times easily swell past two hours.

Hiking above the river valley

If you want to stretch your legs away from the main road traffic, skip the crowded roadside waterfalls and head uphill. The Patho Village Trek - A Short Trek ( 4 hrs ) in Rishikesh costs from Rs 2,494 and takes four hours round trip. Starting near the southern end of the valley, the trail climbs roughly 500 vertical meters through sal forest to a ridge settlement. The climb takes about two hours going up and ninety minutes coming down, giving clear views across the Ganges valley without the heavy crowd traffic of Tapovan.

Another solid early morning foot route is the Hike to Kunjapuri Temple, which costs from Rs 10 for basic entry fees. Start at 4:30 AM from the trailhead near Narendra Nagar, about 20 kilometers up the ridge, to reach the summit before dawn breaks over the Himalayas. Bring a headlamp and two liters of water; there are no shops along the steps until you reach the upper temple precinct. Avoid going on major Hindu festival weekends, when thousands of pilgrims block the narrow stone staircase.

Beach camping at Shivpuri

Camping on the sand beaches right by the water used to be standard, but environmental regulations moved all commercial sites back above the high-water line. For Camping by the Ganges, expect prices from Rs 1,500 per night around Shivpuri, 16 kilometers upriver from Laxman Jhula. Most camps include simple dome tents, communal meals, and access to a stretch of riverfront where you can play Beach Volleyball at Shivpuri or sit by an evening campfire.

The biggest trap here is booking cheap operator sites right next to the noisy highway. Pick a campsite located on the lower river terraces near Marine Drive, accessible only by a short walk down footpaths. Bring earplugs regardless: river noise is louder than you think at night, and jackals howl along the canyon slopes. October and April are the ideal months for camping. January nights are bitterly cold inside canvas tents, while May afternoon temperatures push past 40°C in the sun.
