Matabeleland North

Matabeleland North is a province in western Zimbabwe, sharing borders with Matabeleland South, Midlands, Mashonaland West, and the international border with Botswana and Zambia. Pre-Colonial and Early Colonial History

• Ndebele Kingdom: The region was predominantly inhabited by the Ndebele people, a subgroup of the Nguni, who established the Ndebele Kingdom in the 19th century. King Mzilikazi, a former lieutenant of the Zulu King Shaka, led the Ndebele people into the area around 1838. Mzilikazi established a powerful kingdom whose influence extended across much of what is now Matabeleland.

• Lobengula: Mzilikazi was succeeded by his son, King Lobengula, in 1868. Lobengula's reign was marked by efforts to maintain the independence of the Ndebele people against increasing European encroachment. The kingdom's capital was at Bulawayo, just south of today's Matabeleland North.

Colonial Period

• First Matabele War (1893-1894): Tensions between the Ndebele Kingdom and British colonialists led to the First Matabele War. The British South Africa Company, led by Cecil Rhodes, sought to control the region due to its strategic and economic potential. Post-Colonial Period

• Independence of Zimbabwe (1980): Zimbabwe gained its independence from British colonial rule in 1980. Matabeleland North became one of the eight provinces of the newly independent nation.

• Gukurahundi (1980s): In the early 1980s, the region experienced severe violence during the Gukurahundi, a series of conflicts and massacres carried out by the Zimbabwean government's Fifth Brigade. These events were aimed at suppressing dissent in Matabeleland and resulted in widespread loss of life and human rights abuses.

Significant Landmarks

• Victoria Falls: One of the most famous landmarks in Matabeleland North and indeed in all of Africa, Victoria Falls is located on the Zambezi River at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is one of the largest and most spectacular waterfalls in the world, attracting tourists from around the globe.

• Hwange National Park: This is Zimbabwe's largest national park, located in the province, and is renowned for its wildlife, including large populations of elephants and a variety of other animals.

• Matobo Hills: Although primarily in Matabeleland South, this area is culturally and historically significant to the Ndebele people and is known for its rock formations and ancient rock paintings.
