London’s history is a sprawling, two-millennia epic that begins with its founding by the Romans in AD 43. Originally established as Londinium, it quickly grew into a thriving commercial hub due to its strategic position on the River Thames. Following the collapse of Roman rule in the 5th century, the city was largely abandoned, but it gradually re-emerged under Anglo-Saxon control as Lundenwic. By the 11th century, London had reclaimed its status as England's premier city, a position cemented when William the Conqueror built the Tower of London to assert Norman dominance after his victory in 1066.

Throughout the Middle Ages, London expanded beyond the original Roman walls, becoming a bustling, densely populated center of trade and politics. The Tudor and Stuart periods brought both immense prosperity and devastating tragedy. The 16th century saw a cultural renaissance, epitomized by the flourishing of English theater and the works of William Shakespeare. However, the 17th century tested the city's resilience. In 1665, the Great Plague wiped out roughly a fifth of the population, and just a year later, the Great Fire of London obliterated much of the medieval city. From these ashes, a new London was born, characterized by the magnificent baroque architecture of Sir Christopher Wren, most notably the iconic St. Paul's Cathedral.

The 18th and 19th centuries witnessed London's transformation into the heart of the British Empire. The Industrial Revolution fueled unprecedented population growth, making it the largest city in the world from 1831 to 1925. In the 20th century, London faced the horrors of modern warfare. During World War II, the city endured the Blitz, a relentless bombing campaign by the German Luftwaffe that destroyed vast swathes of the urban landscape and claimed tens of thousands of lives. Despite the devastation, the spirit of Londoners remained unbroken, famously symbolized by Winston Churchill's leadership. The post-war period ushered in an era of rebuilding and mass immigration, transforming London into a vibrant, multicultural metropolis. Today, the city stands as a global capital of finance, arts, and culture, where ancient landmarks like Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London sit seamlessly alongside modern marvels like the Shard, reflecting a dynamic history that continues to evolve.
