Mussoorie Outdoor Guide: Trails, Ridges, and Waterfalls

How to dodge the tour buses and hit the trails on foot.

Hike to Cloud's End before the crowds arrive

Take the 6am taxi from the main taxi stand near the library down toward Hathipaon. The 6-kilometer trail leading past the old estate grounds toward Cloud’s End takes about two to three hours on foot, depending on how often you pause under the dense oak and deodar canopy. Walking here in October gives you sharp mountain air, clear skies, and cold mornings that warm up by noon.

From the edge of the sanctuary trail, you can link up with the path to Explore George Everest House. The walk up the barren ridge to the restored home of the former Surveyor General of India takes 45 minutes of steady uphill effort along a gravel track. Most drivers will pitch you a jeep ride for Rs 500, but walking the ridge costs nothing and gives you unbroken views of the Aglar River Valley to the north and the Doon Valley to the south.

What most visitors get wrong is heading out after 10am. By mid-morning, private cars choke the narrow lane up from Hathipaon, turning a serene forest track into a dusty crawl. If you set out at dawn with a flask of hot tea and a lightweight fleece, you will have the ridge almost entirely to yourself.

Sunrise Walk at Camel's Back Road and Gun Hill

Set your alarm for 5:30am and start your morning on the three-kilometer loop known as the Sunrise Walk at Camel's Back Road. The stretch connects Kulri Bazaar to Library Bazaar along a flat, paved rim with views overlooking the valleys. At this hour, there are no horses, no honking scooters, and no souvenir sellers—just local runners and the early light hitting the snowpeaks.

Near the midpoint of the loop, look for the stone stairs climbing sharply up toward the summit for the Trek to Gun Hill. The climb takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes on foot up a series of steep, rough-cut concrete steps. While the ropeway car charges around Rs 150 for a two-minute ride, walking up costs nothing, gets your heart rate going, and saves you from standing in a 40-minute queue at the base station.

Reach the peak just as the morning sun clears the ridge. The hilltop point can get cluttered with fast-food stalls later in the day, so plan to descend by 8:30am before the first cable cars start operating. Bring water and wear shoes with decent grip, as the damp morning dew makes the lower steps slippery.

Navigating Kempty Falls and Mussoorie Lake early

If you want to Explore Kempty Falls, timing is everything. Located 15 kilometers down the Chakrata road, this spot turns into a chaotic carnival by midday. Hire a local taxi at 7am for around Rs 800 round-trip, reaching the falls by 7:45am. At that hour, the commercial complex around the natural pool is completely empty, allowing you to walk down the steep flight of paved steps in peace and hear the water crashing into the pool.

Skip the overpriced locker rentals and commercial changing rooms at the falls unless you plan to swim. Instead, spend an hour taking in the spray before heading back toward town along the winding road. On your return trip, stop off to Relax at Mussoorie Lake, from Rs 3 entry fee per person. It is an artificial reservoir set into a terraced slope, offering pedal boat rides and simple tea stalls.

While Mussoorie Lake is modest, it makes a convenient, low-cost break point on the drive back to the ridge. Spending 45 minutes here around mid-morning lets you stretch your legs while enjoying a bowl of hot Maggi noodles before the tour buses begin pouring in from Dehradun.

Evening Stroll at Library Bazaar and Mall Road

As dusk falls, start an Evening Stroll at Library Bazaar at the western end of the ridge. This area centers on the historic metal-frame reading room and marks the starting point for a walk down to Visit Mall Road. The two-kilometer pedestrian stretch links the two main hubs of town, free of heavy vehicle traffic during designated evening hours.

Along the way, detour slightly up the quiet side path to Visit Mussoorie Christ Church. Built in 1836, it is widely considered the oldest church in the Himalayan region, featuring gothic arches and stained-glass windows imported from England. A brief Morning Walk in the Gardens nearby offers a quieter alternative to the noisy commercial strip if you want to escape the evening shoppers.

If you visit during autumn, note that Sharad Navratri runs from 11 October 2026 to 19 October 2026. While large-scale Garba celebrations take place down in Gujarat and Durga Puja pandals light up Kolkata, the festive atmosphere spills into the hill towns as well, making evening walks livelier with holiday crowds and lit-up market stalls. End your walk at the eastern end of the ridge with a plate of fresh momos before retiring for the night.
