Weehawken

Weehawken, New Jersey, is a township in Hudson County with a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. The area was originally inhabited by the Hackensack and Tappan tribes of the Lenape Native Americans. The name "Weehawken" is believed to have Lenape origins, possibly meaning "rocks that look like trees" or "at the end" (of the Palisades).

Colonial and Revolutionary Era

In the 17th century, the land that would become Weehawken was part of the New Netherland colony established by the Dutch. It later came under British control. During the American Revolutionary War, Weehawken was strategically important due to its location along the Hudson River, serving as a lookout point and the site of military engagements.

One of the most significant events in Weehawken's history is the infamous duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr on July 11, 1804. This duel took place on the Weehawken Dueling Grounds, located on the cliffs above the Hudson River. Hamilton, the former Secretary of the Treasury, was mortally wounded in the duel and died the following day. Today, a bust of Hamilton marks the approximate site of the duel.

19th Century Development

In the 19th century, Weehawken underwent significant industrialization and urbanization due to its proximity to New York City. The area became a key transportation hub, with the establishment of ferry services and later railroads. The construction of the Weehawken Terminal by the New York Central Railroad in 1884 further spurred growth.
