Vorarlberg

Vorarlberg is the westernmost federal state of Austria, bordered by Germany to the north, Switzerland to the west and south, Liechtenstein to the southwest, and the Austrian state of Tyrol to the east. It has a rich and varied history that reflects its geographical position as a crossroads of European cultures.

Early History

• Prehistoric and Roman Era: The area of present-day Vorarlberg was inhabited by Illyrians and Celts before the Romans conquered it around 15 BC. It became part of the Roman province of Raetia.

• Middle Ages: After the fall of the Roman Empire, the region was settled by Alemanni tribes. By the early Middle Ages, it became part of the Frankish Empire under Charlemagne, and later, the Holy Roman Empire.

Feudal Period

• Counts of Montfort and Werdenberg: In the medieval period, the region was dominated by local counts, such as the Counts of Montfort and Werdenberg, who built numerous castles and fortified towns.

• Habsburg Acquisition: By the late Middle Ages, the Habsburgs began acquiring territories in Vorarlberg. They solidified their control by the 14th century, integrating Vorarlberg into their domains.

Early Modern Period

• Thirty Years' War: The region was significantly affected by the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), with battles and troop movements causing disruptions and hardship.

• Economic Development: From the 17th century onwards, Vorarlberg became known for its textile industry, particularly linen production, which laid the groundwork for its later industrialization.

19th Century

• Napoleonic Wars: Vorarlberg was briefly under Bavarian rule during the Napoleonic Wars, but was restored to Austria in 1814.

• Industrialization: The 19th century saw significant industrial development, especially in textiles and later in machine building and metalworking. The introduction of the railway in the 1870s facilitated economic growth.

20th Century

• World War I and Interwar Period: Like much of Europe, Vorarlberg was affected by the consequences of World War I. The region experienced economic difficulties and political changes in the interwar period.

• Annexation by Nazi Germany: In 1938, Vorarlberg, along with the rest of Austria, was annexed by Nazi Germany. It remained under German control until the end of World War II in 1945.

• Post-War Era: After the war, Vorarlberg was part of the French occupation zone in Austria. It became a federal state of the newly reconstituted Republic of Austria in 1955.

Significant Historical Figures

• Saint Gebhard (947–995): Born in Bregenz, he became the Bishop of Constance and was canonized as a saint.
• Franz Michael Felder (1839–1869): A social reformer and writer from Schoppernau who sought to improve the conditions of the rural population.

Important Landmarks

• Bregenz: The state capital, known for its cultural events such as the Bregenz Festival, and historical sites like the Martinsturm.
• Pfänder Mountain: Offers panoramic views of Lake Constance and is a popular tourist destination.
• Kunsthaus Bregenz: A renowned contemporary art museum.
• St. Gallus Church in Bregenz: A significant baroque church with a history dating back to the 14th century.

Contemporary Vorarlberg

Today, Vorarlberg is known for its high quality of life, vibrant economy, and beautiful landscapes. It is a hub for winter sports, with several popular ski resorts, and continues to have a strong industrial sector, particularly in high-tech and manufacturing industries.
