Tomaszów Lubelski

Early History

Tomaszów Lubelski was founded in 1590 by Jan Zamoyski, a prominent Polish nobleman and statesman, under the name of Jelitowo. It was later renamed Tomaszów in honor of Zamoyski's son, Tomasz. The town was granted municipal rights in 1621, which helped to stimulate its growth and development.

17th and 18th Centuries

20th Century

The outbreak of World War I brought significant changes to Tomaszów Lubelski as the Austro-Hungarian Empire eventually collapsed, and Poland regained its independence in 1918. The interwar period saw the town develop as part of the Second Polish Republic.

During World War II, Tomaszów Lubelski was occupied by Nazi Germany. The town was the site of two significant battles known as the Battles of Tomaszów Lubelski, which took place in September 1939 as part of the German invasion of Poland. These battles were part of the larger campaign that marked the beginning of World War II. The town also suffered under German occupation, with tragic events affecting its Jewish community.

Post-War Period to Present

After the war, Tomaszów Lubelski became part of the People's Republic of Poland. The post-war period saw reconstruction and development efforts as the town was rebuilt. In the latter part of the 20th century and into the 21st century, Tomaszów Lubelski has developed as a regional center for commerce and culture within the Lublin Voivodeship.
