Rijswijk

Early History

Middle Ages to 17th Century

One of the most significant historical events associated with Rijswijk is the Treaty of Ryswick (often spelled "Rijswijk"), which was signed in 1697. The treaty marked the end of the Nine Years' War (1688–1697) between France and the Grand Alliance, which included England, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Dutch Republic. The negotiations took place in the Huis ter Nieuwburg palace in Rijswijk, which was later demolished in the 18th century, but the event is commemorated by the Treaty of Ryswick monument in the town.

18th to 19th Century

In the 18th century, Rijswijk continued to grow, and its economy diversified. The construction of the Delft-Rotterdam canal in the late 18th century further improved Rijswijk's connectivity and facilitated trade.

During the 19th century, with the Industrial Revolution, Rijswijk began to transform. The expansion of railways and other infrastructure contributed to its growth, and it became more suburban as people from The Hague and other cities moved there for its relatively rural charm.

20th Century to Present

The 20th century saw Rijswijk becoming increasingly urbanized. Post-World War II, the area experienced significant housing developments to accommodate the growing population. Rijswijk became more integrated with The Hague and other surrounding areas, reflecting broader trends of urban expansion in the Netherlands.
