• Exodus and Fall (April 10, 1826): Facing starvation and with no hope of external relief, the defenders decided to attempt a mass breakout on the night of April 10, 1826. This desperate attempt, known as the "Exodus of Mesolonghi," ended in tragedy as many were killed or captured. However, the courage displayed by the townspeople and fighters became a symbol of Greek resistance and galvanized international support for the Greek cause.

Important Figures

• Lord Byron: The famous British poet Lord Byron arrived in Mesolóngi in 1824 to support the Greek struggle for independence. He died there in April 1824 from illness, and his involvement brought significant international attention to the Greek cause. • Markos Botsaris: A notable Souliote general and a hero of the Greek War of Independence, Botsaris fought in several battles including those in Mesolóngi. He is celebrated for his bravery and leadership.
