Istra

Early History

The area around Istra has been inhabited since ancient times, but the town itself was established much later. The first recorded mention of the settlement dates back to the mid-16th century when it was known as Voskresenskoye. 17th Century

18th - 19th Century

20th Century

In 1930, the town was renamed Istra. This period marked a time of transformation as Soviet policies led to industrial growth and the development of infrastructure. However, World War II brought devastation to Istra. The town was occupied by German forces in 1941, and significant battles took place in the area. The New Jerusalem Monastery suffered damage during the war but was later restored.

After World War II, Istra underwent reconstruction and continued to develop industrially and culturally. The town became an important scientific and educational center. Notably, it houses the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute for High Pressure Physics.
