Ialysós

Ialysos, known historically as Ialysós, is one of the oldest cities on the island of Rhodes, located in the Dodecanese archipelago of Greece. It is situated on the northwestern part of the island and has a rich history that dates back to ancient times.

Ancient History

• Mycenaean Period: Ialysos was one of the three ancient cities on Rhodes. The city was founded during the Mycenaean period, around the 16th century BCE. It became an important center for trade and culture due to its strategic location.

• Classical Period: During the classical period, Ialysos, along with the other two ancient cities of Lindos and Kamiros, played a significant role in the political and cultural life on the island. It was part of the Doric Hexapolis, a federation of six cities in the region.

• Hellenistic Period: In 408 BCE, the cities of Ialysos, Lindos, and Kamiros unified to form the city of Rhodes, located at the northern tip of the island. This consolidation was aimed at strengthening their economic and military power.

• Persian Wars: The people of Ialysos, like those of the rest of Rhodes, had interactions with the Persian Empire. During the Greco-Persian Wars, Rhodes was initially under Persian dominance but later became an ally of Athens.

• Peloponnesian War: Rhodes, including Ialysos, sided with Athens during the Peloponnesian War but eventually switched allegiance to Sparta.

Medieval and Modern History

• Byzantine Era: During the Byzantine period, the region continued to be inhabited and was part of the Byzantine Empire. The spread of Christianity led to the construction of numerous churches and religious sites.

• Knights Hospitaller: In the medieval period, the Knights of St. John (Knights Hospitaller) controlled Rhodes from 1309 to 1522. They fortified the island, and remnants of their architecture can still be seen today.

• Ottoman Rule: In 1522, Rhodes fell to the Ottoman Empire, and Ialysos, like the rest of the island, remained under Ottoman control until the early 20th century.

• Italian Rule: After the Italo-Turkish War in 1912, the island was ceded to Italy. The Italians undertook significant modernization and architectural projects until the end of World War II.

• Incorporation into Greece: Rhodes, along with Ialysos, became part of Greece in 1947 after the Treaty of Paris.

• Filerimos Hill: This is a significant archaeological site located near Ialysos. It was the acropolis of ancient Ialysos and has remains from different historical periods, including ancient temples, early Christian basilicas, and a monastery from the Knights' period.

• Church of Our Lady of Filerimos: Located on Filerimos Hill, this church was initially constructed during the Byzantine era and later modified by the Knights Hospitaller.

• Ancient Ruins: Excavations have revealed parts of the ancient city, including remnants of houses, public buildings, and fortifications.

Historical Figures

• Cleobulus of Lindos: Although not from Ialysos, Cleobulus was one of the Seven Sages of Greece and a contemporary figure of importance in the region. His influence extended throughout Rhodes, including Ialysos.

Ialysos today is a vibrant municipality that combines its rich historical heritage with modern tourism, attracting visitors to its archaeological sites and beautiful beaches.
