Early History

Hampstead’s history dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was mentioned as "Hamstede," a Saxon term meaning "homestead." During the medieval period, it was a small hamlet, primarily agricultural, lying on the outskirts of London.

In the 17th century, Hampstead began to develop as a spa town when mineral springs were discovered in 1700.
