Fort Bliss

Fort Bliss is a United States Army post located in El Paso, Texas, and extends into New Mexico. Early History

• 1848: Following the end of the Mexican-American War, the U.S. Army established a military post at the Pass of the North, which would later become El Paso, Texas. This original establishment was known as the "Post Opposite El Paso."
• 1854: The post was relocated to Magoffinsville, a few miles north of the present-day downtown El Paso, and renamed Fort Bliss in honor of Lieutenant Colonel William Wallace Smith Bliss, a distinguished officer who had served as the chief of staff to General Zachary Taylor.

• 1861-1865: During the Civil War, Fort Bliss was occupied by Confederate forces until being retaken by Union forces in 1862. The fort was abandoned and relocated several times during the war.
• 1878: The fort was permanently re-established at its current location. It served as a base for military operations during the Indian Wars and conflicts with the Apache tribes.

Early 20th Century

• 1914-1917: Fort Bliss became a crucial base for U.S. military operations during the Mexican Revolution. Notably, it was the base for General John J. Pershing's punitive expedition against Pancho Villa in 1916-1917.
• 1920s: The fort began to focus on anti-aircraft artillery training, setting the stage for its future as a key center for air defense.

World War II

• During World War II, Fort Bliss expanded significantly, becoming a major anti-aircraft training center. It housed German and Italian prisoners of war, and its population swelled with soldiers and support personnel.

Cold War Era

• 1945-1950s: After World War II, Fort Bliss became the center of U.S. Army anti-aircraft and missile development. It was the site of the U.S. Army Anti-Aircraft Artillery School and later the U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery Center.
• 1946: The pioneering German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun and his team, brought to the U.S. under Operation Paperclip, worked at Fort Bliss, contributing to the development of the U.S. missile program.

Modern Era

• 1990s-Present: Fort Bliss has continued to evolve, focusing on air defense and missile defense training. It is home to the 1st Armored Division and plays a critical role in U.S. Army operations.
