What to know

Information not available.

Delčevo is a town in the eastern part of North Macedonia, situated in the Pijanec region near the Bulgarian border. It serves as the administrative center of the Municipality of Delčevo. The town has a rich history, dating back to ancient times, and has undergone various cultural and political changes over the centuries.

Ancient and Medieval Periods: The area around Delčevo has been inhabited since ancient times. Archaeological findings suggest that this region was part of the ancient Paeonian territories, and later it came under the influence of the Roman Empire. During the medieval period, the area was part of the Byzantine Empire and later became part of the Bulgarian Empire.

Ottoman Era: The town was under Ottoman rule for several centuries, starting from the late 14th century. During this time, it was known as Carevo Selo. The Ottoman influence is evident in the architectural and cultural aspects that remained in the town even after the end of Ottoman rule.

20th Century and Beyond: In the early 20th century, with the decline of the Ottoman Empire, the region became a point of conflict during the Balkan Wars. Following the wars and the subsequent division of Macedonia, Delčevo became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia) after World War I.

During World War II, Delčevo, like much of Macedonia, was occupied by Axis forces. In the aftermath of the war, it became part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, within the Socialist Republic of Macedonia.

Post-Yugoslav Era: With the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, Delčevo became a part of the newly independent Republic of Macedonia (now North Macedonia). The town has developed significantly since independence, focusing on enhancing its local economy and infrastructure.

Significant Figures: The town is named after Goce Delčev, a revolutionary figure and leader of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO), who played a significant role in the struggle for Macedonian autonomy from Ottoman rule.

Important Landmarks:

  1. St. Nikola Church: A significant cultural and religious site in the town.
  2. Goce Delčev Monument: Erected in honor of the revolutionary hero.
  3. Pijanec Museum: This museum houses artifacts and exhibits that detail the region's history and cultural heritage.

Delčevo today is a vibrant town that continues to celebrate its rich history while looking towards the future with ongoing development and modernization efforts.
