Bila Tserkva

Bila Tserkva is a city of significant historical and cultural importance located in the Kyiv Oblast of central Ukraine. Its history dates back to the early medieval period and is marked by a variety of significant events and developments.

Early History:

• Founded in 1032: Bila Tserkva was established by the Grand Prince of Kyiv, Yaroslav the Wise, and was originally known as Yuriev. • Branicki Influence: In 1774, Polish nobleman Franciszek Ksawery Branicki became the owner of Bila Tserkva. Branicki invested in the city, developing the famous Alexandria Park, which remains a major landmark and one of the largest landscaped parks in Ukraine.

19th Century:

• Russian Empire: Following the partitions of Poland, Bila Tserkva became part of the Russian Empire. During this time, the city saw significant economic development and infrastructure improvements.
• Jewish Community: Bila Tserkva had a significant Jewish population, which contributed to the cultural and economic life of the city. The community faced challenges, including pogroms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

20th Century:

• World Wars and Soviet Era: Bila Tserkva experienced occupation and hardship during both World Wars. Under Soviet rule, the city underwent industrialization and urban development. The Jewish community suffered greatly during the Holocaust, with many being killed during Nazi occupation.

• Bila Tserkva National Agrarian University: Established in the 19th century, it is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Ukraine.
